"No wonder croquet has been popular since the mid-1800s--it can be played by anyone, young or old, in a backyard or small grassy area. The video begins with a short history of the game illustrated by paintings and old photos. Equipment is explained, followed by a diagram of the layout of a basic nine-wicket court, which is adaptable. The rules of croquet are simple but can be modified depending on player level. The winner is the person or team with the most points, but how to score and achieve bonuses is only part of the game. Players may use many strategies to move the ball between the small wickets. For example, hitting an opponent's ball with your own--a move called roquet--can give you an advantage for your next shot or impair your opponent's shot. Eileen Kupstas Soo, a croquet teacher and tournament player, shows how to hold the mallet and gives playing tips. The narrator's tone is well modulated and clear, and directions easy to follow."
