Average Customer Review:
Almost Unwatchable

I adore The Who and love John Entwistle's bass playing. But, I found this tape disappointing. First, his tone is terrible. He seems to be running it through a Marshall amp set for a heavy distortion meant for lead guitar. And, although he does delve somewhat into concepts such as bass lines and some of the traits that made him such an extraodinary bassist, a lot of the tape meanders, both in terms of explanation and performance. His "jams" with Arlen Roth are particularly bad. They sound like those nights in high school when you got together with your buddies and just played whatever, to the point where you couldn't even be sure you were all playing in the same key. I don't know, maybe using this type of fuzzy tone and unconventional bass playing worked when he was jamming with Pete at Leeds, but in the environment of an instructional video, it just hurt my ears. Sorry to write such an unflattering review. John Entwistle is one of the greats, and his tragic passing marked the end of an era in innovative rock bass.
