Grounding and empowering
Mark
I’ve been working on a challenging project for seven months. The project has been going well, but I was getting burned out… and it is going to take another year to see it all the way through to success. I decided to take the Dissolving Barriers To Success video workshop to see if I could find a way to complete the project successfully, without sacrificing myself in the process. I did the three explorations in the video over a weekend. In the first exploration, Mark asked me to explore what success meant for me, by slowly arranging my body to a posture of success, while becoming aware of the other things that were associated with it in my mind, emotions and body. I was surprised to discover that for me, success included a feeling of distancing myself from other people – by feeling like I was above other people. Then Mark asked me to explore what failure meant for me. Again, failure for me included a feeling of distancing myself, but this time by getting smaller and withdrawing from other people. Finally, he asked me to combine the postures of success and failure. Immediately my body and mind became confused, as I tried to do two things at once that I had always held as opposites. After struggling for a while, I gradually felt more comfortable, and more connected, as the conflict seemed to melt. In his introduction to the workshop, Mark had said that confusion usually comes before a significant change, so I took my confusion as a sign that something was working, even though I wasn’t sure what. In the second exploration, Mark asked me to reach for success, guiding me to do it in a way that brought my barriers to success into increased awareness. As I did this, I realized that I perceived success as something outside of myself: that success was different from me and distant from me. As this realization filtered into my awareness, my movement changed, and instead of reaching for success, I was bringing it to myself and opening up to receive more. At the end of the exploration I felt much more grounded and at peace. My To Do list was still just as long, but somehow it felt OK to be where I was in my project. That night I slept for nine hours instead of my usual six, and woke up feeling wonderfully rested. The next day, I started on the third exploration. Mark asked me to adopt a posture of success again, this time noticing how it had changed from the posture I adopted in the first exploration. I was surprised to discover that now it included a sense of being connected to other people, and that I felt much more present in the moment, rather than working for something in the future. As Mark guided me through the rest of the exploration, I realized that in my family growing up, we were encouraged to work hard, but that success was always held as something a few years in the future. In other words, hard work was good, but success was unattainable. With this realization came a recognition that I can enjoy the success I have already achieved. I still have a lot to do to complete my project, but I think I’ll be more relaxed and enjoy the process more as I work on it over the coming year.
