DESCRIPTION

This film, which Essanay claimed was a "new" Chaplin comedy, was released three years after the conclusion of Chaplin's contract with the company. The film was assembled from the discarded portions of POLICE, the ending of WORK, and an abandoned feature length production entitled Life, along with some new footage directed by Leo White in 1918. The plot has Charlie working in the home of an eccentric inventor from whom some German spies are attempting to obtain a formula. TRIPLE TROUBLE, however, is best seen as an opportunity to view portions of the abandoned Life, Chaplin's first attempt to direct himself in a feature-length film.

In Chaplin's Essanay Comedies, made in 1915, cinema's greatest comedian was first able to build his screen work around his performance style rather than forcing himself, as before, into Mack Sennett's frenzied Keystone comedy matrix. With this freedom Chaplin evolved in a year from the gag comedian of "His New Job" to the brilliant pantomimist of "A Night Out," "The Champion," "The Tramp" and "Shanghaied" to the profound satirist of "Police."
